Beautiful white curtains are the calling card of every perfect housewife. How can you restore the whiteness of gray and yellowed curtains?

An important way to store your curtains

If you have a lot of space in your closet, a great solution is to hang the curtains folded in half in a cover on a hanger. This way you can avoid creases on your curtains. When you have little space in your closet, it is a good idea to opt for storage boxes. In such a box, you should put, as many curtains as fit comfortably in it – do not stuff them or creases will appear. The box should be stored in a dry place without daylight.

Chemical products for bleaching curtains

In stores you can find a lot of different bleaching agents for curtains. Each of these preparations contains in its composition:

  • salt,
  • soda,
  • lye.

Often it is enough to pour the contents of the sachet into the laundry or pour the appropriate amount of bleaching liquid – this is a very great convenience. It is worth trying to whiten the curtains at home, using ecological methods.

Home methods for bleaching curtains

Home methods for whitening curtains, are often much more effective than all the chemicals available in stores.

Kitchen salt

Table salt is an ally of many housewives in housekeeping. To whiten curtains, prepare a solution of 4 tablespoons of salt and 3 liters of warm water. Salt mixed in water to dissolve. To such a solution put the laundered curtains and leave for about 2 hours. After this time, rinse thoroughly in clean water and dry.

Baking soda

It is well known that baking soda has a bleaching effect. Just add a teaspoon of baking soda to the laundry.

Vinegar

It stiffens and bleaches fabrics. It prevents electrification and dyeing of artificial fibers. Just add half a cup of vinegar to your laundry.

Ammonia

Bleaches as well as baking soda. Before washing the curtains in the washing machine, soak them for about 2 hours in water with ammonia – add 2 tablespoons of ammonia to 2 liters of water.

Baking powder

To bleach the curtains this way, first soak them in water with baking powder (4 teaspoons of baking powder per 5 liters of warm water). Then wash the curtains with capsules, gel or washing powder for white fabrics. You can also add baking powder directly to the laundry.

Egg shells

One of the oldest methods. Just put the eggshells in a linen bag and wash them together with the curtains. The effect is guaranteed.

Lemon juice

Before washing, soak them for about an hour in water with lemon juice (1 liter of warm water for 1 lemon). After washing, it is advisable to dry the curtains in the sun.

Aspirin

To bleach with aspirin, dissolve 5 tablets in 2 liters of warm water. Soak in this solution for at least a few hours.

How to wash the curtains?

Machine wash at 30°C with gentle spin. Before washing, it is advisable to put them in a special bag. If you do not have such a bag, place the curtains in a pillowcase. This will prevent creasing and tangling. Wash the curtains in batches – max. 3 pieces. This way each curtain will be well washed and soaked.

After washing, hang them slightly damp, then they will be nicely arranged on the curtain rail and will not need to be ironed. Do not dry the curtains in an electric dryer. They may then become deformed. If the curtains were heavily creased during washing, it should be ironed on the left side. The iron should be set on low temperature.

Bleaching gray and yellowed curtains is not at all difficult or laborious. It is enough to apply household tricks to restore the whiteness of the curtains.
