Leather furniture is the perfect complement to a classic interior. Unfortunately, they are susceptible to dirt, which is not so easy to clean. With help come special products that will make our leather sofa look like new

Regular vacuuming

Like fabric upholstery, the leather one should also be vacuumed regularly. Thanks to this we will get rid of all the dirt. If you don’t do it, you may get stains on your leather sofa that won’t come off and will penetrate the leather structure too much. Try to vacuum the leather using a special, soft tip with bristles, which will not scratch the surface of the furniture

Cleaning with soapy water

It is important not only to wipe off all liquids that spill on your sofa, but it is also very important to clean the sofa in general, preferably with soapy water. To refresh a leather sofa you need special distilled or filtered water, because the one from the tap contains chlorine and mineral compounds

After drying the c ouch, there may remain traces of scale, which are very difficult to remove later. Grey soap works best for this purpose; dilute it with water in the proportion of one part soap to two parts water. More difficult dirt can be removed with a toothbrush. Less stubborn ones will be removed with a microfiber cloth or a soft sponge.

For cleaning leather sofas, it is also worth buying a special agent, which will additionally preserve it. You can also make it yourself. For this we will need only oil, a little turpentine and milk. To the mixture we also add vinegar – 10% solution. The liquid should be massaged into the sofa with circular motions. Another home remedy for cleaning and maintenance of leather furniture is a body lotion or hand cream, which in its composition has at least 5% glycerine. It will work well topically when we want to significantly reduce the visibility of nicks and scratches. We should not use butter or salad oil for leather furniture preservation as these become rancid in the hollows of the leather. It is worth using another greasy preservative, preferably odourless, which will make the leather shine and prevent cracks from forming.

For the maintenance of leather upholstery, coconut oil, jojoba oil, petroleum jelly, castor oil, and olive oil will work very well. If the smooth leather no longer has the former luster, you can rub stiff egg white into the upholstery

DIY leather furniture remedies

What to clean a leather couch with? You can make your own leather furniture preservative, just bring 200 ml of linseed oil to a boil in a pot and after cooling combine it with 200 ml of vinegar and mix well. The preparation should be applied to the old, already cracked leather upholstery with a clean cloth.

Light stains also go down perfectly thanks to moistening baby wipes. Such a product does not have alcohol in its composition, so it will be gentle for leather upholstery.

Not all leather can be washed wet. It is worth making a small test in an invisible place to see whether the given piece of furniture may be washed with water. If water soaks into the leather almost immediately, it is better to refrain from washing it with soapy water.

Small and hard-to-remove stains from leather upholstery will help us remove hairspray.

How else can you protect leather upholstery?

It is important to place leather furniture at least 40 cm away from the radiator or other heat sources because under its influence the leather may crack and crease. In order to keep the air humidified, we should take care of ventilation, but also humidify it using a container with water, which can be placed on the radiator. It is also worth cleaning and impregnating the leather regularly with a special agent intended for this purpose.
