We often wonder how to deal with a clogged sink. Do you call a plumber or use some kind of pipe cleaner? Here are 4 best ways to deal with a clogged sink.

Probably everyone has had to deal with a clogged sink in their kitchen or bathroom at least once in their life. What bothers us is not only slow flowing water and deposits, but also unpleasant odor coming from the drain trap. However, before you decide to use the services of a plumber or a strong chemical agent, try to unclog the sink with easier methods. We have prepared 4 ways that you should try out.

Why is the sink clogged?

First of all, we should find out what causes our sink to clog. We cook and wash dishes every day. Remains of food and grease along with water get into the pipes. Such connections cause that after some time a blockage is formed, which limits the outflow of water from the sink. When you remove the drain trap for cleaning, you will find out how much unwanted debris is in it

The same thing happens not only in the kitchen, but also in the bathroom. Before the sink or basin finally stops working, you can already take preventative measures when:

– the water begins to flow more slowly,

– there is a gurgling sound as the water enters the pipes,

– air bubbles appear as the water flows.

Everyone wants to get rid of this problem as soon as possible. However, instead of immediately reaching for a strong caustic agent or calling a plumber, try to fight a clogged sink with home methods.

Method number 1: a traditional pipe cleaner

Start with a rubber pipe pusher – it’s an old but effective method!

Its end acts as a suction and pressure pump. Plug the overflow hole with an old cloth, rag, or possibly your hand. Once you have done this – put the rubber end to the drain and press intensively and pull the pusher. After a while you should be able to unblock the sink.

The plunger creates pressure that will suck out or push through the blockage. In addition to the traditional rubber plunger in stores we already get modern versions of this item. The equipment in its appearance resembles a gun with a rubber suction cup. Filling the device with water, you will be able to both suck out and push through any dirt lingering in the pipes.

Method number 2: soda and vinegar

The second method for unclogging pipes is the irreplaceable baking soda and vinegar. Pour the prepared solution (half a glass of baking soda and half a glass of vinegar) into the drain of the sink. Do this quickly, before the mixture starts foaming, and plug the drain with a cloth. After 20 minutes, everything should be poured several times with boiling water. Done! The pipe should be unclogged.

Method number 3: the so-called “adder”, or spring

The third method for unblocking drains is the “adder” method. What is it? Adders are called special springs. They are quite long and have a sharp tip. On the other side there is a crank, thanks to which you can insert an adder into a sewer

Before you start using a spring, you have to remove the trap. Always turn the spring in the direction opposite to its turn, only then you will be able to remove the accumulated impurities. When using the adder, however, you need another person to hold the end in the right position. This equipment is safe for any installation. However, you should remember to use the adder gently

Method #4: strong chemicals

The last, fourth suggestion for fighting a clogged sink is, of course, chemical agents (most often it is called a mole). This is a very popular method used in our homes. To buy a chemical agent is very easy, because it is found in many stores

Why are such preparations strongly corrosive and often dangerous? The ingredient on which chemical agents are based is sodium hydroxide. Thus, great care should be taken when using such products. You need to follow the instructions on the package.

How to prevent clogging of the sink?

First of all, food debris should not get into the drain. If we do not take care of this, it is very possible that the problem of not flowing water will arise. That’s why everyone should buy an extra strainer to stop waste from getting into the pipes. It is worth thinking about getting a waste grinder. This equipment grinds up what goes down the drain (such as food scraps), making it less likely to clog.
