How to spray dye flowers?

In order to prepare an interesting autumn decoration, we can dye dried flowers and twigs with colored sprays. Spray dyeing of dried plants improves thecondition of flowers and protects stems from breaking. The easiest way to dye flowers that have already dried in the sun and slightly faded, and those that have a light shade by nature. Slightly more difficult to color will be flowers that are naturally covered with wax, or those with an intense and strong color

In addition to spray coloring, we can use anil dye, stamp ink or food coloring. Spray painting flowers is very easy and does not require any special preparations, but for safety reasons it is better to carry it outdoors or in the garage. Simply spray your chosen plants with the spray dye and let it dry for a few hours at best

What flowers are suitable for dyeing?

The best flowers for deep dyeing that can be pigmented easily are those with white petals. Their tinting is quick and it is easy to control the color you get from painting. White lilies or carnations are perfect for preparing decorations with spray tinted flowers. These are summer flowers, so it’s a good idea to cut them while they’re blooming and dry them to make interesting decorations

Flowers that are year-round and most often subjected to dyeing and coloring are roses. You can paint them in fancy and unusual colors like blue, cobalt, black or navy blue. Also suitable for dyeing are various autumn leaves, which can make beautiful bouquets for the table. Thanks to coloring, they will not crumble and will retain their original appearance for a long time. You can add to the bouquet a few sprigs of rowan along with the fruit and also paint them in an interesting color

Dyeing flowers by soaking the stem in dye

An interesting alternative to spray coloring flowers is the method of soaking the flower stems in water with colored dye. This method gives beautiful delicate effects, and it can be done at home without worrying that the pigmentation process will stain our furniture or floor. Just prepare flowers with white petals and cut their stem so they are not too long, about 15 cm is enough

This process shows wonderfully how plants transport water through their stems up to the flowers, so it can be done with children. Just add a good amount of food coloring to the water (a few drops will not color the liquid). Then soak our beveled stem and wait until the next day. The flower, by taking in the dye water, will change the color of the petals and even the leaves to the color of the dye used

Why should you not spray dye potted plants?

More and more often, especially during the holiday season, we see silver or gold spray-painted potted plants in store offers. These are usually small conifers, laceleafs, or clumpweed , which are additionally covered with artificial snow. Unfortunately, such decoration is not a beneficial treatment, in most cases ending in the drying of potted flowers. The paint that has been applied to their leaves and stems clogs the stomata, making it difficult for them to breathe, and also limits the amount of light that reaches the leaves, condemning the plants to numerous nutritional deficiencies
