Have you ever forgotten about a piece of bread that has already dried out and is theoretically unfit for consumption? Not at all. There are plenty of recipes and ways you can use old bread and even turn it into a tasty dish.

Breadcrumbs

The most popular and easiest way to recycle already hard bread. Cut the bread into small pieces and dry them in the oven at 150°C. You can put the dried pieces in a food processor or put them through a meat grinder. It is worth mentioning that if you do not have access to an oven or other equipment, you can always dry your bread on a radiator and grate it. Breadcrumbs are most often used for breadcrumbs. You can coat fish, cheese or various chops. It is also perfect as a roux to pour over cauliflower or beans.

Bread sour

What exactly is bread acid? It is a drink produced as a result of fermentation of wholemeal bread with water and yeast. It has many properties: it regulates digestion, quenches thirst, is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and B vitamins. In Russia it is sold at street stalls and stored in barrels. The homemade drink contains 0.5 to 2.2% alcohol and is carbonated as a result of fermentation.

Ingredients

  • 500 g of stale rye bread,
  • 5-6 liters of water,
  • teaspoon of sugar,
  • 20 g of yeast,
  • large jar for storage or several smaller ones,
  • optional raisins.

Preparation

Cut the bread into cubes, bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 10-15 minutes until browned. Place the bread in a large jar or stoneware pot and cover with boiling water. Set aside for 24 hours. Drain off the acid and discard the bread pieces. Prepare yeast starter – crumble yeast with a teaspoon of sugar and pour lukewarm, boiled water (0,5 l), mix and set aside in a warm place for 10-15 minutes. Add the leaven to the bread solution and set aside for another 24 hours. When the sourdough starts foaming, strain it again and pour into a jar (or into several smaller ones, if you don’t have a bigger one) up to ⅔ of its height. You can put a few raisins in the jars. Set aside in a cool place. The sour will be ready after 4 days, and you can consume it for up to 4 weeks

Bread in egg

A perfect dish for breakfast. Crack a few eggs into a bowl, add seasonings such as salt, pepper or garlic and whisk. Coat slices of bread in them. Fry the bread in butter. You can serve it with jam, sugar or honey.

Croutons

Very simple way for a warm meal. Preheat the oven to approximately 190°C. On the slices of stale bread you can put your favorite cheese and sprinkle with spices or herbs. Bake for about 7 minutes. Voilà!

If you want to diversify the dish, you can prepare oil to spread on the bread. Prepare 2 tablespoons of olive oil and add a little garlic to it. Lightly brush one side of the slices and place in the oven

The croutons will be a great addition to creamy soups or onion soup.

Torrijas

A dish prepared in Spain at Easter time. To make torrijas, it is best to use stale, two-day old bread (baguette or wheat bread will work best)

Ingredients

  • ½ liter of milk,
  • 2 cinnamon sticks,
  • 2 teaspoons sugar,
  • orange or lemon peel.

Preparation

Boil the milk with the cinnamon sticks, sugar and orange or lemon peel. Cut the bread into 1,5-2 cm pieces, place in a deep dish and pour the lukewarm milk over it, set aside until the bread has absorbed the liquid. In the meantime, heat some olive oil in a frying pan. Coat the soaked bread in flour, then in egg and fry in hot oil on both sides for about 2 minutes. Drain the fat on kitchen paper, sprinkle with mixed sugar and cinnamon, set aside to cool and chill in the fridge. Serve cold.

Dry bread for animals?

It is absolutely forbidden to feed bread to animals! In dogs, for example, this can lead to bloating and constipation due to the long digestion by our pets’ digestive systems where bread begins to ferment. Birds fed bread can become ill with acidosis or angel wing syndrome. Kidney damage and diarrhea are also likely to occur. Many of these conditions often result in death as a consequence. The same is true for horses, where some breeds may be at risk for laminitis, a hoof disease.
