Basil on your kitchen windowsill is a great window decoration, but not only. You can use it for everyday cooking, thanks to the fact that it is aromatic and delicious. Do you buy it in the supermarket? See what you can do to keep it fresh longer.

Basil from the supermarket – take care of it!

Do you often buy basil from the supermarket and it dies after a week or a few days? Unfortunately, it is characterised by a short lifespan.

As far as basil is concerned, this is caused by the way it is sown, i.e. the herbs are too close together. That’s why it is advisable to replant them, gently separating the roots. Remember to get new soil, a pot lined with agro-textile and kermazite (optional, although the usual mix from the garden store should also be fine) and a decorative cover. Match the size to the herb – a pot that’s too big won’t be a good idea.

Set your supermarket basil preferably on a windowsill or countertop. The place should have access to daylight. The substrate should be moist all the time, so it is a good idea to put a little water on the saucer or in the casing, for example, so that the basil drinks water when it needs it.

Basil also likes a special kind of watering, namely, you should not pour water over the leaves . This can cause the plant to rot more quickly.

It’s also a good idea to regularly trim the uppermost leaves of the branches so that the herb can grow free and wide.

It is also a good idea to plant basil yourself instead of buying a ready-made bush in the supermarket. Here, however, a little patience counts.
