What to use to remove rust from clothing?

Various stains often appear on clothes. Some of them can be easily removed with a regular detergent during washing. How to deal with more severe stains? If you have rust stained clothes, you don’t have to throw them away right away. There are effective home remedies for removing rust from clothing.

TOP 10 household methods for removing rust from clothing

Homemade ways to remove rust are cheap and eco-friendly. Before you reach for the chemicals for stain removal, try first the homemade ways of our mothers and grandmothers.

1. Fresh rust stain

For fresh rust stain, it is best to use salt or natural acid, such as lemon juice, citric acid solution or wine vinegar. Rub the chosen product into the clothes and leave it for about an hour (preferably in the sun). After this period, wash the garment.

2. Baking powder

Rub the baking powder into the rust stain and leave it for a while. Then rinse with cold water and wash in the washing machine with detergent.

3. Ammonia

Add 2 teaspoons of ammonia to a glass of water and then heat the solution up to 40°C. Soak the stain and leave it for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, rinse it in warm water with ammonia.

4. Oxalic acid

Add 10% oxalic acid to warm water (3 drops per 1l of water) and rinse the stained clothes in this solution. Then rinse the garment in cool, clean water and wash it.

5. Natural slurry

To prepare the slurry you will need a glass of vinegar, the juice of one large onion and 30 g of clay and 30 g of soap flakes. Boil all the ingredients, stirring constantly. Leave the prepared slurry to cool down. When the pap cools down to the temperature of about 40°C, apply it on the stained spot, wait about 20 minutes and wash it

in soapy water.

6. Mix of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia

In a plastic or glass dish, mix together:

• 4 Tbsp water,
• 3 tablespoons of 12% hydrogen peroxide,
• 5 tablespoons ammonia.

When the mixture is homogeneous, apply it to the stain, wait a moment and gently wipe off the pap with a gauze pad soaked in the borax solution.

7. Lactic acid

Soak the stain in lactic acid with a little water. Then immediately iron the spot with a high heat iron. Repeat these steps until the stain is almost invisible.

8. Wine vinegar

Mix 1 teaspoon of wine vinegar in a glass of warm water. Soak the rust stain in this solution, leave for a while and then rinse well.

9. Onion

Crush one onion through the press, add 35 ml of glycerine and leave it for 3 hours. After this time, rub the stain with lemon and wash the clothes.

10. Lemon and citric acid

Wrap a thick slice of lemon in a cloth and put it on the spot. Iron the cloth with lemon for a few moments. Wash the clothes.

Dissolve a packet of citric acid in a glass of water and heat the solution to 90°C. When it has cooled down to 40°, put the soiled piece of clothing in it. Then wash the garment.

Removing rust from fabrics – home methods

Rusts on delicate fabrics such as satin, silk and velvet can be treated with vinegar and cigar ash. Pour vinegar over the stain, then sprinkle cold cigar ash over the stain. After an hour, wash the ash with water and spirit and launder

Rust stain on silk and wool can be removed with a solution of zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid 5%. Apply the solution with an ear stick on the stain, then rinse immediately with warm water. Be very careful not to discolor the fabric beyond the stain.

Colored fabrics

Prepare a solution of 5% potassium fluoride and a few drops of acetic acid. Using an ear stick, apply it to the stain and rinse immediately. You need to be very careful not to accidentally discolor the fabric outside the stain.

To remove rust from jeans, prepare a mixture consisting of toothpaste, salt and vinegar (1:1:1 ratio). Rub the prepared paste on your jeans and leave it for 10 minutes
