Hair oil treatment has been known for hundreds of years, but it still does not lose its relevance. It is a simple and inexpensive way to nourish our hair and make it shine. What are the different oil treatments? What is the best oil to use? We explain below.

Some women worry that using oil will weigh down their hair and make it look dull. If you choose the right oil and treatment method, your hair will benefit from it. The benefits of oil treatments include

  • protection from harmful weather conditions,
  • less hair loss,
  • effective hair regeneration,
  • moisturizing and strengthening the hair,
  • reduced sebum secretion,
  • help in the fight against dandruff, inflammation and irritation of the scalp,
  • facilitated combing of hair,
  • lower susceptibility of hair to mechanical damage,
  • faster hair growth.

How to choose the right oil?

The success of oiling lies primarily in the correct choice of oil. We must match it to our hair type and needs. We distinguish between high, medium and low-poor hair.

Highly refined hair is rough, damaged, dry, brittle and often curly. They need very deep moisturizing. The best choices for such hair are argan, evening primrose, corn, cottonseed, sweet almond and grapeseed oils.

Medium Rough hair is prone to frizz and curls. It is best to use sesame, rapeseed, sunflower, sea buckthorn, hazelnut, or prune seed oils to care for medium-coarse hair. You may also use olive oil.

On the other hand, low-porous hair looks smooth, flowing and even slippery. To oil them, use shea butter, cocoa butter and mango, pomegranate seed, coconut, castor, palm and babassu oils.

Oiling Methods

You can oil your hair in several ways. Among the most popular are:

  • dry oiling – this is the easiest and fastest method. Simply apply oil to dry, unwashed hair. It is important, however, that no styling products remain on the hair. Leave the oil on for 1-3 hours,
  • Wet oiling – first soak your hair in water, drain it and only then apply oil. Leave for at least 30 minutes,
  • oiling on the primer – this method is suitable for very dry and damaged hair. The primer must be a substance that stores water, i.e. humectants such as honey or aloe vera gel. First work the primer through your hair and then apply oil. Leave the treatment in your hair for at least an hour,
  • Hair oiling in a bowl – 1-3 tablespoons of oil are mixed with warm water in a bowl, then you bend over and soak your hair. After about 3 minutes, remove the strands, drain the excess mixture and wrap in a towel for an hour.

How Do I Wash the Oil Out of My Hair?

Washing your hair is the final step in oil treatment. Oil does not mix with water so it can be difficult to wash out. The best way is to first apply a conditioner or mask. Rinse your hair with warm water and leave it for 15 minutes. Then thoroughly rinse out the conditioner/mask and shampoo. Finish off the treatment by re-applying conditioner or a vinegar rinse.

How often should I use oil treatments? The frequency of treatments should be adjusted to the needs of your hair. Regularity is important.
